Quick answer
Hetzner Cloud offers the most generous specs for the money we found, DigitalOcean is the easiest first server, and Vultr has the lowest entry price at $2.50 a month. Pick Hostwinds if you want managed support included, and read the renewal terms on any promotional price such as IONOS's $2 entry plan.
A cheap VPS is easy to find and easy to regret. Entry plans often come with tiny memory, promotional prices that jump at renewal, or no support if the server breaks, so the cheapest sticker price is rarely the cheapest server to run.
We compared vendor pricing pages, documentation and user reviews for seven providers sold in the US, UK, EU, Canada and Australia. We attribute every figure to its vendor, and we leave prices out where a vendor's own pages disagreed.
Below you will find the seven picks, a comparison table we compiled, advice by situation and an FAQ. We did not run hands-on tests, and some links on this page are affiliate links, which do not change our ranking.

1. Hetzner Cloud — Best Overall Value
What we like
- Hetzner lists 20 TB of included traffic on CX plans in its EU locations
- The CX23 lists 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM and 40 GB of storage
- Hetzner says there is no minimum contract and you pay the cheaper of hourly or monthly billing
- Hetzner Docs show a clear traffic overage rate per terabyte
Keep in mind
- Hetzner's June 2026 price adjustment raised CX prices
- Hetzner's cloud is built around Europe, with separate US pricing
- Fewer one-click apps than some larger clouds
Hetzner's price adjustment of 15 June 2026 lists the CX23 at 5.49 euros per month excluding VAT, up from 3.99 euros before the change. The CX23 has 2 vCPUs, 4 GB of RAM, 40 GB of storage and 20 TB of included traffic, according to Hetzner. That is a lot of memory and bandwidth for the price, which is why it tops this list even after the increase.
Hetzner's docs say traffic beyond the included amount costs 1 euro per TB in the EU, billed per calendar month, and that plans have no minimum contract. US and Singapore locations use different prices, so check the pricing page for your region.
Skip it if you need a large catalog of one-click apps and managed add-ons, or a support team that holds your hand through server setup.
2. DigitalOcean — Best for Beginners
- From $4 a month
- Per-second billing
- Large docs library
What we like
- DigitalOcean lists Droplets from $4 a month
- Billing moved to per-second with a 60-second minimum from January 2026, per DigitalOcean
- Bundled plans have a monthly cap, so you pay no more than the flat price
- Inbound bandwidth is free, per DigitalOcean
Keep in mind
- The $4 plan has only 512 MiB of memory
- Larger tiers cost more than comparable Hetzner specs
- Pricing pages mix bundled and per-resource models
DigitalOcean's Droplet pricing page lists the cheapest Basic Droplet at $4 a month with 512 MiB of memory, 1 vCPU, 10 GiB of SSD and 500 GiB of transfer. The next tier is $6 a month with 1 GiB of memory, then $12 a month with 2 GiB. DigitalOcean says Droplets moved to per-second billing with a 60-second minimum from 1 January 2026.
What you pay extra for is the ecosystem: a large library of written guides and an easy control panel. For a first server, that matters more than a few dollars.
Skip it if you want the most memory per dollar, since specs on the cheapest plan are small.
3. Vultr — Lowest Entry Price
What we like
- Vultr lists Regular Performance plans from $2.50 a month
- High Performance plans use NVMe SSDs, per Vultr
- Several plan families let you move from shared to dedicated vCPUs
- Hourly billing is offered on Vultr's cloud compute
Keep in mind
- The $2.50 tier has a 0.5 GB memory option, which is tiny
- Regular Performance uses older shared Intel CPUs, per Vultr
- Pricing pages show several families that are easy to confuse
Vultr's Regular Performance page lists plans from $2.50 a month and describes shared previous-generation Intel CPUs with regular SSDs. The High Performance family, with newer AMD or Intel CPUs and NVMe SSDs, starts at $6 a month with 1 GB of RAM, according to Vultr.
That makes Vultr the cheapest way to get a server online, but the $2.50 plan has a 0.5 GB memory option, so it suits tests, small scripts and learning rather than a busy site. Check that the plan you want is available in your region.
Skip it if you need a server for a database or an application with real traffic, where 0.5 GB of memory will be a problem.
4. Akamai Cloud (Linode) — Best Known Brand Behind the Plan
What we like
- Akamai lists the Nanode 1 GB at $5 a month, or $0.0075 an hour
- The plan lists 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, 25 GB storage and 1 TB of transfer
- Akamai's docs say extra egress is $0.005 per GB in most regions
- The entry price stayed at $5 when other shared plans rose 20 percent, per Akamai's pricing update
Keep in mind
- Specs at the entry level are modest for the price
- Other shared plans rose in price in a recent update
- Mixed Linode and Akamai branding can confuse new users
Akamai's cloud pricing page lists the Nanode 1 GB at $5 a month, equal to $0.0075 an hour, with 1 vCPU, 1 GB of RAM, 25 GB of storage and 1 TB of transfer. Linode is now part of Akamai, and its product pages say shared CPU instances start at $5 a month.
Akamai says it raised other shared and dedicated plan prices by 20 percent in a pricing update, while the Nanode stayed at $5. Its docs say additional egress costs $0.005 per GB in most Akamai Cloud regions.
Skip it if you want the highest specs per dollar, because Hetzner's CX23 lists 4 GB of memory and 40 GB of storage.
5. Contabo — Large Allowances for the Money
What we like
- Contabo's lineup scales from entry plans to 18 vCores and 96 GB of RAM
- Core plans offer SSD or NVMe depending on the tier
- Performance plans use AMD EPYC CPUs with NVMe, per Contabo
- Prices are listed in euros with different terms
Keep in mind
- Contabo's own pages show different prices for the same plan depending on term and VAT
- Plan names and specs have changed between pages
- Cheapest prices depend on a longer term
Contabo's pages describe three main lines: Core Cloud VPS plans, Performance plans with AMD EPYC CPUs and NVMe storage, and Storage VPS for capacity. The top Core plan lists 18 vCores and 96 GB of RAM, and an 8 vCPU plan lists 24 GB of RAM and 300 GB of SSD, according to search results from Contabo's site.
Prices on Contabo's own pages differ by term length and VAT treatment, and the figures we saw did not agree, so we print no price here. Check the term and total at checkout.
Skip it if you want a simple, predictable price and plan naming, or if you plan to cancel after a month.
6. IONOS VPS — Best Promotional Entry Deal
- From $2 a month promo
- Unlimited traffic at 1 Gbps
- Root access on every plan
What we like
- IONOS lists unlimited traffic up to 1 Gbps with no extra charges
- Full root access comes with every VPS plan, per IONOS
- Plans support AlmaLinux, Debian, Rocky Linux and Ubuntu
- IONOS pages mention a 30-day money-back guarantee on some VPS pages
Keep in mind
- The $2 price is a promotion that appears to last three months on a one-year term
- Renewal prices are not shown on the pages we saw
- Refund wording differs between IONOS pages
IONOS VPS pages list plans on NVMe storage with unlimited traffic up to 1 Gbps and root access on every plan. Search results from IONOS's site showed an entry plan promoted at $2 a month, which appears to apply for three months on a one-year term. Specs and prices differed between snapshots, so we print no renewal price.
Some IONOS pages advertise a 30-day money-back guarantee, while the US page calls it a risk-free 30-day trial. Read the terms on the order page. Some links on this page are affiliate links.
Skip it if you plan to stay for years and care about renewal pricing, because the promotional rate is only the opening term.
7. Hostwinds — Best for Managed Support
- Managed and unmanaged
- 24/7/365 support on managed
- Snapshots and firewall
Best for: Site owners who want support included and would rather not manage the server alone
What we like
- Hostwinds says managed plans include 24/7/365 live chat and ticket support
- Unmanaged plans are priced up to 50 percent lower, per Hostwinds
- Hostwinds lists 1 Gbps ports, SSD storage, snapshots and an enterprise firewall on Linux VPS plans
- Full root access is included, per Hostwinds
Keep in mind
- Hostwinds pages show different prices for the same entry plan
- Unmanaged plans carry no technical support, per Hostwinds
- The uptime figure is Hostwinds' own claim and we found no independent check
Hostwinds sells managed and unmanaged Linux VPS plans. Managed plans include 24/7/365 support through live chat and tickets, along with ongoing server maintenance, according to Hostwinds. Unmanaged plans give full root access and no technical support, and Hostwinds says they cost up to 50 percent less than the equivalent managed plan.
The entry plan lists 1 CPU, 1 GB of RAM, 30 GB of SSD and 1 TB of bandwidth. Hostwinds' own pages showed different prices for it, so check the current price on the order page. Some links on this page are affiliate links.
Skip it if you are comfortable running a server yourself and want the lowest price, since Vultr lists plans from $2.50 a month and Hetzner's CX23 lists 4 GB of RAM.
Comparison table

How to compare cheap VPS plans
Memory decides whether a server is usable, so look at it first. A 512 MiB plan can run a script or a small tool, while a website with a database wants at least 1 to 2 GB. Traffic allowances matter next, because overage charges can erase a saving. Then check term and renewal: a promotion that lasts three months is an introduction, not a price. If you are weighing a VPS against builder-style hosting, our best free website builder guide covers the no-server route.
Common complaints
Across vendor documentation and user reviews we saw the same patterns. Promotional prices that rise at renewal, plan names and prices that differ between a provider’s own pages, and unmanaged plans with no help when something breaks. None of these are reasons to avoid a provider, but each is a reason to read the order page before paying.
Who each pick suits
Beginner learning Linux. DigitalOcean’s documentation library and simple panel make it the gentlest start. Hetzner is better once you are comfortable at the command line.
Self-hosting tools. Automation tools such as n8n can run on a small VPS, and our n8n vs Zapier comparison explains the trade-off with a hosted service. Pick at least 2 GB of memory for anything with a database.
Game servers. A generic VPS is a workable base for some game servers, but dedicated hosts add tooling; see our best Minecraft server hosting guide.
Monitoring. Whatever you choose, set up uptime alerts. Our UptimeRobot review covers a free option.
Responsible use
A VPS gives you root access and a public IP address. Follow the provider’s acceptable-use policy and local law, and do not use a server to bypass the terms of any service.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cheapest VPS hosting?
Vultr lists Regular Performance compute from $2.50 a month and IONOS promoted a $2 a month entry plan for an opening term. Both are very small plans, so compare memory and renewal prices before choosing.
Is a $5 VPS enough for a website?
A small WordPress site or a personal project can run on 1 GB of memory, such as the $5 Nanode 1 GB listed by Akamai. A busy site, a database or several apps will need more memory.
What is the difference between managed and unmanaged VPS?
Hostwinds describes unmanaged plans as full root access with no technical support, and managed plans as including 24/7 support and server maintenance. Managed costs more, and unmanaged assumes you can run Linux yourself.
Do cheap VPS plans include a lot of bandwidth?
It varies. Hetzner lists 20 TB on its CX plans in EU locations, DigitalOcean lists 500 GiB on its $4 plan and Akamai lists 1 TB on the Nanode 1 GB. IONOS lists unlimited traffic up to 1 Gbps.
Will the price stay the same after the first term?
Not always. IONOS's $2 entry price appears to be promotional for an opening term, and Contabo and Hostwinds pages showed different figures for the same plans. Check the renewal price on the order page.
Can I use a VPS for a VPN?
Many providers allow it, but acceptable-use rules differ by vendor. Read the provider's terms first and use a server only in line with them and with local law.
Final Verdict
Choose Hetzner Cloud for specs per euro, DigitalOcean for an easy first server and Vultr for the lowest entry price. Add Hostwinds if you want support included, and treat promotional prices from IONOS as an opening-term deal. Check each provider's pricing page for current figures before you order.
